Pp Next Time Round?
« on: January 15, 2008, 10:12:58 PM »
I had 5 months of manic psychosis and 4 months of depression following our first child. I am now fully recovered (he is nearly 2) and we are considering our 2nd and would love to hear of any positive stories regarding how any of you coped with subsequent pregnancies/babies.

Also, if any of you are suffering from PP for the 1st time & want to talk or share any of your feelings - I would have LOVED to know about this website then and wold be more than happy to offer any support I can.

We had an easier time with number 2 - he was born around 20 months after our first son and, obviously, with my wife suffering the first time round, we were anxious too. I won't lie and say everything was plain sailing - some symptoms did return, but the important thing is that we expected them to and they were suitably managed.

My wife took low doses of medication throughout the pregnancy, moderate doses towards the end and higher doses immediately after birth, slowly decreasing afterwards. The result was, instead of several month's worth of mania and paranoia, a couple of short outbreaks, which worried me at the time. But in truth, it was much more manageable and everything worked out OK.

And I'd say number 2 was probably worth the trouble.

Hi Dave,
Can you tell me what medication was prescribed and if there were any risks to the baby? Was it anti psychotic or mode stabilisers?
thanks
Fiona

Yes, of course. Stelazine (trifluoperazine), which is an antipsychotic. Dose was 2mg once a day (obviously drug choice and dosage varies according to the patient).

We were assured it was tried and tested and posed no risk to the baby. Indeed our second was born in good health.

Hi Fiona
I have had a very positive experience with my second child after having had post puerperal psychosis with my first. Knowing the nightmare I had first time round I asked to be referred to Psychiatrist before birth of second child, started on Anti-depressents morning ater the birth and luckily have had no problems at all. I had a community psychiatric nurse visit once a week for first 6 weeks and knew I had support if needed but had no symptoms of psychosis or depression, just the odd hormonal moments most new mums get. I am still taking AD's as a precaution 18mths on but can say the whole experience has been great and far more how I thought motherhood would be. My advice would be ask for all the help you might need and if the worst does happen everything will be in place should you need it but fingers crossed you wont! Best of luck Angela
